Importance of Fasting Blood Sugar in Diabetes

    JonathonBy JonathonAugust 30, 2022No Comments4 Mins Read

    Introduction

The lifestyle of people has changed rapidly, leading to increased stress levels. Eventually, all of it points towards chronic diseases. Even at a very young age, people are facing severe concerns. One such serious issue arising these days is diabetes mellitus. Diabetes occurs when there is a high level of sugar in the bloodstream. The fasting blood sugar test is done to measure the blood sugar. It includes calculating your blood sugar levels after not eating and fasting over the night.

If you are facing diabetes symptoms, it is essential to check the fasting sugar and understand the degree of your problem. Immediate doctor advice is necessary for proper diagnosis before starting any medication. An individual requires glucose or sugar to have the energy to wake up; hence, your body starts getting ready for the day early in the morning. It goes through the natural biological procedure of churning out the stored glucose.

    What is Fasting Blood Sugar?

As the name suggests, it is measured after a fast of 10-12 hours overnight. Thus, we haven’t eaten anything for long to affect our blood sugar levels externally. Thus, the normal levels are 99 mg/dL or lower. However, with prediabetic patients, the normal fasting blood sugar can be from 100 to 125 mg/dL. But higher than that generally means we are diabetic. Early diagnosis and treatment can help you keep the levels in control and avoid the medication for life.

    Types of Diabetes

Before understanding these symptoms, let us know the two types of diabetes and their respective signs. There are mainly three types of diabetes.

    Type 1 diabetes

The first type is Type 1 Diabetes. This type of diabetes is present right at birth. It occurs due to a malfunction in the pancreas where the formation of diabetes is disturbed. The symptoms include hunger, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, and increased thirst.

    Type 2 diabetes

The next is Type 2 Diabetes is mainly due to distorted lifestyle choices and conditions. The symptoms are prolonged, including sweet cravings, fatigue and tiredness. It occurs due to an imbalance in glucose levels.

    Gestational diabetes

This type of diabetes only occurs in pregnant and lactating women. It commonly occurs due to a hormonal imbalance. Diabetes generally cures on its own when the hormones are balanced, usually after the completion of lactating.

    Common Symptoms of Diabetes

If you have someone in your family with a diabetic problem, you might be able to detect the early diabetes symptoms. Otherwise, it might be avoided for a long. But it is always advisable to visit the doctor if you face any mentioned symptoms. Here are a few common ones:

    • Increased thirst and hunger: The need for water increases with frequent urination. The kidneys work more than normal; hence, we feel more need to quench your thirst again and again. Along with this, there are higher levels of hunger too. This is due to the bodily procedure trying to get out the increased blood sugar. With more expelling of glucose, more food is required to make up for it.
    • Frequent Urination: The urgent and frequent calls for urination are one of the most common and early signs of diabetes. It is your kidney’s way of expelling excess blood sugar.
    • Unexplained and significant weight loss: This is again a common symptom. The most straightforward explanation includes removing your most crucial energy source, glucose. If there is no explanation for this sudden and significant weight loss, it is advisable to visit the doctor.
    • Fatigue: Dehydration due to frequent urination with loss of glucose, balancing the excess blood sugar, the body reacts with fatigue and weakness.
    • Blurred vision: Blood sugar levels also cause harm to small blood vessels of the eye; hence, there can be blurred vision issues as initial symptoms of diabetes.
    • Slow wound healing: With weakened blood circulation, any wounds and injury events take extra time to heal and get better when your blood sugar levels fluctuate.

    Conclusion

Hence, as mentioned earlier, diabetes symptoms are hard to manage and call for urgent treatment. If maintained well, it can help you to stay moderately healthy, not worsening the symptoms.

One of the most common ways to detect diabetes is through the fasting blood sugar test. In most cases where normal high levels are recorded, medication needs to be started with lifestyle changes like cutting out on sugar and other sweet items, avoiding rice, potatoes and a few fruits and even creating some physical activity.
