How to apply for a visa to China in 2022?
At the moment, the easiest way to get a China visa is to go through a travel agency. They will handle everything for you, including picking up and dropping off your passport, and paying all of the fees. This can be both convenient and cost-effective.
However, after March 31, 2016, they will no longer be able to help foreigners apply for a Chinese visa in this manner. Instead, you’ll have to do everything by yourself. Luckily, it’s not very hard. Here are some of the steps involved:
Step 1: Make an appointment at your local Chinese embassy or consulate. You’ll need to provide them with
- your passport number (which is on page 2),
- full name as it appears on your passport (also on page 2),
- date of birth (on page 3), and
- gender (this one’s easy).
- They may also ask for proof that you are leaving China again after visiting (example: plane ticket).
Step 2: Get a copy of your passport. Your local Chinese embassy or consulate can provide this for you for about $10 USD or so. You will need to bring this copy in with you when you show up to pick up your visa in order to get it stamped into your passport. Otherwise, they won’t give it back — that would just be silly! 😉 Click here if you have any questions about this process at all! If not… let’s move on!
Step 3: Pay the visa processing fee! This varies from country to country; however, typically it costs somewhere between $50 – $140 USD per person (depending on how many days you want). The price varies depending on things such as where you live (the closer to Beijing or Shanghai you are located, the more expensive visas tend to be). Your embassy or consulate should also be able to tell you how much it costs before making an appointment there — just pick up the phone and call them! For example, if I were applying from Washington D.C., I would call my local Chinese consulate and ask them exactly how much my visa would cost me before setting an appointment time there — then I would plan accordingly based upon their answer! This way I don’t end up overpaying by accident! 😉 It might sound silly because money is money… but better safe.
